Why are register pip tubes so long? Why is partially blocking the bore with a 10mm long tube supposed to be a good thing?
It's a design compromise intended to avoid register hole hiss when using a wide variety of mouthpiece designs. It works usually, but causes noticable intonation, tonal, and response problems.
The Benade-Style, non-protruding pip results in superior intonation, tonal center, and improved response. Hiss is avoided simply by matching the mouthpiece to the horn.
